Platform Progress Update

I thought I would take a few moments to go over some of the features we are working on for the platform and answer one of the more burning questions that we have encountered in the forums since this whole process began.

If you’ve been keeping up with us, you know that our goal is to help our users create strong, new friendships. One of the ways in which we hope to do that is by encouraging members to join each other on dives, bike rides, hikes, or whatever else your passion involves. I mean, who couldn’t use another fishing buddy right? To that end, we’ve created an application we call “Connections” to make it all happen. Here is a screenshot of a Connection on TrailGrind.

*Please note - we are using TrailGrind (mountain biking) as the example. If you are waiting on a different brand in our Active Lifestyle Channel everything will be customized for your affinity.*

As you can see from the other links on this page the platform has all of the basic social network tools along with the info needed to connect a group on an upcoming trail ride including the place, date, time, and a description. It also includes handy tools like a “Comments” section and a “People Connecting” area for getting to know who you might be riding with, should you decide to join.

So looks simple right? Why are we seeking beta testers so aggressively instead of just rolling it out and building as we go? Before I answer that let me take a moment and try to explain just how important Connections are to the platform and how it separates us from other sites you know.

The biggest difference between the Lifefitter platform and a generic social network is our goal to help you make NEW friends versus just keeping in touch with existing friends. To accomplish this goal the Connections application must facilitiate this process but before that can happen, it takes PEOPLE using the platform.

We have modeled the Connections application similar to match making utilities on dating websites but instead of helping you find a suitable dinner companion, we want to help you meet other mountain bikers (or SCUBA Divers, or Cyclists, or whatever your passion is).

Web history has taught us that when dating websites fail to attract a large and active membership base very quickly they fail 99.9% of the time. So to go back to the original question of: "Why are we seeking beta testers so aggressively"? Simply stated, just like a dating website we need enough members on each affinity/brand to create connections for you from day 1. If we don't have a good base of beta members there won't be any connections and you won't find much utility in the site. So, we decided to launch the beta invite process early and aggressively solicit invite requests.

Some of you who requested your invite early in the process are already getting anxious. We get a lot of "what the hell is going on?" emails. This is the first time we have shared exactly what we are up to with our Connections application and we hope you can appreciate the need for an extended beta marketing push and we ask that you please be patient. We have setup Pages on facebook for every brand and we invite you to use these pages and connect with other prospective beta members as we all await the platform.

We are doing our best to promote the upcoming release and get as many people signed up as possible and we would love for you to help. Some of you are participating in the viral MSA promotion which is really helping to spread the word and help us get that much needed large membership base. We appreciate that. For those that were not interested in MSA, we would still really appreciate it if you tell your friends by emailing or posting a link to the site...every little bit helps.

We will continue the pre-marketing push aggressively until there are enough people sitting on go to make a run at this thing. We hope you will remain excited about the platform and be ready to jump in and use it on day 1.

Here are a few more screenshots of the Connection application tools so you can view, create, search, and manage all of your connections.

So, thoughts? Comments? Dislikes? Let’s hear it. After all, we are here to provide you with an exciting, useful tool that will encourage you to grow your friendship tree tall and wide. Thanks for dropping by and checking out what we’ve been up to. Anyone in Columbia want to play a couple of sets at Hampton Circle tomorrow? :)

it would be nice to see a swap hunt or fish section where interested parties could meet and trade hunts..

Haven't finished reading the entire page but to be honest I'm kinda disappointed. To me it's just looking like another myspace or facebook just aimed at sports/recreational activities. We shall see though...

Unknown said...

It all "looks" nice; however, it's tough for we future-users to tell what is useful or useless or missing at this point. Looking forward to it launching, though! And, hopefully a volleyball brand will be coming soon?

Lifefitter said...

@jordan

We are going to be very different than myspace and facebook. While we are not ready to discuss everything at this point if you look at the screen shots you will see that this connection utility is unlike anything on those other social networks.

We are modeling the Connection application more like a "dating" website than a typical social network....but instead of matching you with a dinner date we are matching you with someone who shares your affinity whether it be SCUBA Diving on ReefDrift or snowboarding on JibSwitch or any brand in between.

To be a "social" website we need core functions like friends, photos, etc...but we assure you that our focus is in developing the Connections application and whether or not our platform will suck will pretty much rest on how much everyone likes that tool.

Thanks for the feedback.

As long as it's better than Facebook and Myspace. The primary thing I dislike about Myspace, is the the abundance of underaged over sexual half naked teenage girls, and their horny overaged male friends. From what I've seen so far, Trailgrind doesn't seem to be aiming at that large portion of the population, but are there any plans to keep them off the site? I'm looking forward to the beta being released.

I agree with Medic, that's the biggest problem with myspace. I would totally be all for it if there were a way to keep the younger teens off the site, because there could be potential issues say if i, a 20 yr old, and my connections who i ride with are anywhere between 18-30+, and then a 15 yr old wants to join our rides. It would kinda suck having to shut him or her down and any other younger kids who wish to join. I'm just saying it could be a potential hassle that i would like to avoid like Medic.

Unknown said...

Well said mellocello. I know Myspace says it's 18 and over, but it's not enforced at all. I'm not sure how you would keep people from lying about their age without gather personal information, but it would be nice to ride with someone your own age.

I think one of the things that attracts the younger kids to Myspace is the fact that they can change their profile layout design and colors. Having been that age, a few years ago, it was a cool idea to have that "individualism" that's hard to attain in high school. I do like the idea of having trailgrinds be set up more as a dating style site, because it takes that aspect out of your page, and I don't think it will interest the younger population unless they are die hard mountain bikers, hikers, swimmers, etc. As long as it's made clear that the site is not a dating site. The concept is there, hopefully it will take off

... just because the previous metal was forged by my-space and face-book does not mean that two-worded url's are really all that great... most of your names in fact suck for trying too-hard to accomplish-nothing. For most folks a one liner would have been much more effective. All you had to do was to fly to Manhattan and hang out at a coffee shop. Any hipster could have blown your stuff away in stantly. They have been delivering pop culture to America for 50 years now. It is practically formulaic - why waste money on anything less?

Lifefitter said...

@jonathan - Tell us a SINGLE .com one word domain name that is AVAILABLE for purchase to fit our target channels and we'll send you a check for $100.

The brands are intended to be relevant and somewhat easy to remember....that's it....oh yeah, it was also somewhat important that they were available to purchase for $15 bucks each.

space monkey said...

Have to say that local level numbers are going to make or break this for many people, not the name of it.

If There is no one on the application/website to meet up with for rides then it won't work no matter how cool the name, one word or two.

most dating style websites have an age preference range. this probobly will as well.

I think intergration with other sites will be helpfull. and providing incentives like contests with sponsered prizes could really pull in more people. Weather they were photo contests, or writing contests, things that people could do in groups to help make friends. even having shwag stickers or t-shirts, or coffee cups as prizes. Maybe if you want it to be more activity based you could have the prizes rewarded for best event every month.

Just thoughts

Wow, tough audience...

It's great to get feedback, but it all seems a little unappreciative.

You are targeting a MTB audience and providing a service that isn't easily accessible or sufficiently shaped by any of the normal social sites - so well done and thank you from me !!!

I like the simple layout of the pages you've presented and, to be honest, I don't really care whether there are 1 or 2 words in your URL (it'll be added to my favourites anyhow) - simplicity is best (you only need to look at Google's search engine to realise that.

Can't wait to try out the site, but I guess success or failure will be based upon the groundswell of contributors, ease to link with existing social networking sites and, through the previous two, preventing fb (or similar) from
building their own version...

Best of luck chaps and I look forward to seeing you up and running soon...

Unknown said...

I agree with Shawn. I like how it looks so far, and the amount of words in the URL is irelivent. Keep it up guys, keep it simple and easy on the eyes. I can't wait 'til the site is up and going. Good luck

Grace said...

Not sure how many women are participating in your network yet, but if you want to draw in more people like me (women 30-55 who kick butt on the trail), lose the advertising containing busty babes. I like the idea of the network, but almost blew it off because I figured the Hooter's like ad meant this was intended for hyper-hormonal males.

Orin Salah said...

I agree with grace, the busty chick had my thinking this was probably just some more info-spam...hope that isn't the case.

Joyce said...

I love the concept.
I wish I would have known about this last weekend (with the additional wish that the site was fully up and operational).
My climbing/hiking partner bailed on me at the last minute for a hike up Tumbledown Mt. in Maine.

So if you/we can make a go of this, I'm ALL for it.

But I agree with losing the busty Hooterchick-wannabes.
We keep in real on the mountains. I'm not there to show off my C-cups.

Unknown said...

I love this =)

Unknown said...

Basically anything is better than myspace, imo.

But this looks good, and I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes!

Anonymous said...

It looks simple enough that people won't be overwhelmed by just looking at it.

Unknown said...

im really lookin forward to this website, i live outdoors and itll be really cool to have a decent way of doing things with people u dont know

knelson said...

This is exciting! I am glad to hear that you won't be another myspace or facebook - these networks are limited in terms of finding out about new sites to hike around the area or others who love to share their experiences about snowboarding, kyacking, rockclimbing, etc. The layout also appears very user-friendly. Looking forward to the development of this networking site!

Carl said...

The best thing for me would be a good way to find rides; not necessarily to meet up with people, but GPS trail maps, etc. The more resources to find places to ride the better!

Brig said...

I agree with Carl. I'd like reviews and ideas on local campsites and hikes--or a good place to create my own reviews--without a lot of hassle.

Anonymous said...

dead on brig, couldn't have said it any better myself

Tom said...

I imagine you'll get a lot of bang from the context-targeted gear ads! The features (and some of the layout) seems like a mashup of eVite, Facebook, and eHarmony. It'll certainly bring together folks with common interests, whether it's fishing, PT cruisers, or GeoSearching. If that's the goal and there's enough money in that market, fine. I like the basic idea, but it's not original enough. Perhaps the connection features will reflect some innovative technology or novel concept. Think outside the box, two steps past web 3.0 or 4.0.

Anonymous said...

Don't forget about geocaching! it's one of the main reasons I hike and camp. It gives a purpose to the trails and is a big factor in which ones I choose to do!

docbeccy said...

This would be great if it was similar to the social golf site I belong to in San Diego through meet-up.com. If you're not familiar go to www.meetup.com and you will find groups in most cities that meetup because of shared interest. If this was a site where one could find golf partners anywhere you might travel it would be useful to my husband and I.

I like what I see so far. The potential is there for a great site to get like-minded people together for some adventures. You are right though, you will need a good list of users to make it worth while, especially in the sparsely populated but nature endowed areas of Canada.

seems like a legit idea but some of the people who have posted comments also have some good points. As long as it does not turn out like another myspace with naked girls and horny old guys, it should be a cool new connecting website.

Unknown said...

I'm looking forward to this website starting up. I need some new mountain biking buddies. Current ones are too flaky.

LasagnaTime said...

I think this is a great idea and wish the beta version was available to use rather than read about. It is hard not to be skeptical when it is all talk at this stage. As a web designer I understand the process and amount of time it takes to launch a large site. I will be patiently watching the development of this site.

BB said...

I think i'm with everyone else, looks like facebook. I myself am a hunter and maybe this will be a good format to find members for hunting clubs or just serve as a forum for related topics.

john said...

i think this looks great. i live in central texas and sometimes its hard to find new people to go on rides or hikes. this would be awesome to get people together to meet somewhere and hike. there is nowhere i know of around here, besides REI, centered around the outdoors an online place to meet would be awesome. even if it is like myspace or facebook so what those sites are so successful i would love to see something like that centered around hiking and biking and all that. i wouldn't mind getting teens involved in the outdoors and would want to see them included in the site. why keep them from joining this and in places like facebook when you could get them outside and active.

ZiggySmith said...

I'm hoping this is going to be a good idea. Truly, I do. Mostly, I would just like updates on where the great hikes are locally- the ones not commonly highlighted in the literature

drew said...

I haven't had a chance to read all the comments yet, but if you haven't starting making an iphone/ipod touch application that mirrors the interface of the website, I suggest you do so. Facebook has one, and out of habit and curiousity I load it just about every time I use my touch. It should definitely be free for download from itunes. I'm not 100% on this, but I believe the developer kit runs $100 for it.

I am some what confused to whether or not this is a dating site. I have a boyfriend who doesn't enjoy mountain biking and hiking the way I do so I was just looking for some friends I could ride with.

Unknown said...

Looks like or doesn't look like another facebook, that's not really a big deal. It's about the purpose of the website, about bringing together us outdoor enthusiasts. I'm excited to discover new places to check out for skiing, hiking, swimming, camping, ect and people to go with. Can't wait to check it out!

Unknown said...

it looks nice, but it does sort of seem like a spin off of myspace or facebook. it would be nice if hiking groups that are already in place could post here and organize here. they could plan events or hike or just have them posted so new people can come along.

Steve said...

I don't know if anyone touched upon it again, but I think someone made a good point in suggesting that the site have an age range preference for networking. I'm all for meeting new people of different ages and backgrounds, but when it comes down to it, I'm probably going to want someone closer to my age for that hiking trip.

Steve said...

I also think it's important not to get caught up in all of the gaudy applications that other social networks have. Consider the target audience, although we may/may not spend time online at work, chances are a computer screen won't hold much of our time. I think simple will be effective in this case, and from the screen shots, it seems to be on the right track.

Unknown said...

It looks like it has potential, but I could see it getting overwhelmed by facebook like applications and stupid spamming. As long as the site stays focused on the MTB community and and purely networking it could avoid turning into a myspace like site.

Does anyone else know someone who has/had been having trouble activating their membership? The link that OutPacker sent me keeps sending me to a page that says it is an invalid confirmation link. That is highly inconvenient.
Thanks for listening!

Yes, I'm also having the same problem you are with confirming.

Did you try all the links in all the emails... I got 8 emails all at once, all the same (except for the links)... only one of the confimation links worked... you gotta love beta testing. Oh and it was not the last one that was sent out of the 8... it wsa like the 5th one or something like that. Good luck.

Doug said...

great but when I clicked on the confirmation link sent to me in my email it took me to a page that said:You have clicked an invalid confirmation link.

All but one of my links gave me that, did you get more than one email?

As you design, keep in mind the event providers. My organization puts together hikes on old roads and other landscape artifacts. We're currently planning a 40 mile road ride and dinner for March and would love to find a one-stop outlet for our events. I see your site as having great potential for marketing. In fact, given your target users, we would even begin organizing some serious struts if it looked like we could draw a crowd. So, as well as providing for the shoppers, I hope it will be possible to make room for site and event managers.

Love the looks of the site. We work with REI (manage their online advertising) and would love to hear more about that partnership and how best to integrate with your platform.

Unknown said...

The idea sounds great. The high volume beta testing is dead on. My advice though would be to make sure it is really easy to navigate. With such a broad reach, it can be tricky to make it easy for people to find what they are looking for. Looking forward to this, when I first moved here it took me a few months to find good climbing partner. Hopefully this will work.

~ae said...

Yes, it is pretty exciting to get into this early. Will there be meet-up style profiles, where I can post photos of different camp sites and hikes?

Will you have "corporate" members--like existing groups or clubs who already participate in adventures together, so we can connect with established entities? (esp. important when traveling)

And. Um. Sorta like Grace and Orin Salah posted, will you establish some guidelines on modesty about the style of advertising you allow? Images that folks upload from their adventures is one thing... selling ad space for lots of cleavage with a little logo is another. :)

~ae said...

And like space monkey wrote, will you have contests for best photos/video/maps/essays/experiences?

Prizes will be neat but maybe more importantly will be getting featured on the homepage :)

Gifts are good, reputations are....

With the way houses are being built around America these days, it's hard to find good places to hunt quail and pheasant. To have a place where I might have a chance in finding a new place to hunt sounds great. We shall see...

JJ said...

It seems like a great idea and i think it will work out good. A couple things i think you should add is a skill level for different sports/recreational activities and also add whether or not the person has their own gear or is needing loaner/rental gear. Nothing worse then trying to keep up with someone who is way above your skill level or slowing down for an inexperienced novice. Also the right gear is very important and some gear can be quite expensive to purchase. Maybe for each event you can make an option for gear required or rental gear/loaner gear available.

Scruffy_P said...

I think a great thing would be to allow members to post information on successful hunts, like the number of points collected during a single deer season day, or the beard length of a Tom during the last season, and then show a leaderboard for each game type. That would definitely be a good conversation starter. (Also, you'd probably have to require picture verification for each kill, but in this day and age that's easy.)

JJ said...

I think would also be a great idea is to go to sporting goods stores and see if you can work some deal with them for advertising with them like big 5 or dicks or sport chalet. That would help A LOT with getting members.

Anonymous said...

This is a great concept. Another idea that I didn't seem to read is an weekly or monthly update on hunting/fishing reports/ as in good...slow..low or high water level etc.in various areas. It would be cool if members could post stories and pics of hunts and still regulate obscene pics or comments.

I totally agree with kaitlyn. I'm really stoked about being able to make new friends to ride with. I'm from NY and about 45 minutes away from the city and there's only about two decent places to ride around here and there more than over crowded (mountain creek). so, to make some friends and get out of this place for a weekend sounds pretty awesome. i think this site is going to do well.

I really need a partner for any of the following mountains. Mt Baker, Mt Rainier, or Mt Hood. I want to ascend one of them this July. This actually sounds like it could take off fairly quickly. I'd personally like to see a discgolf section. I move frequently and often find it difficult to find good courses and pickup games. It may be beneficial to let people rate their own skill levels on their profiles that-a-way ppl won't get in over their heads (i.e.,rockclimbing, extreme hiking). And maybe a forum for experts wanting to give lessons?

As long as this isn't just another "average" social network, it will be fun. Also, I haven't figured out how it will work yet, but I HOPE we can find people and events in EVERY part of the country. Looking forward to launch

Not sure if my post hit or not, so I'm going to resend. I'm in NH and am looking forward to launch. I'm not sure how many of us have signed on so far, but hopefully alot more will. I lost my hiking partner when he was killed in a cycling accident this past summer and need to find new people to hike with

Well, looks like there's lots of naysayers but I'm really excited about this website. I'm in the Navy and it can be tough to meet people in new areas that are interested in adventuring. I think this will help a lot.

I am for this type of connection in the world. Although it is a mix of Myspace type forum, and Outdoor World, this type of connection is good for people who are new to their cities or states. I am ready for the launch.

I love the idea for this website!
I've been dieing to find a site that will let me find new people to be outside with.
So far the page shots look great and easy to use. I can't wait for it too be up and running :)

I am definitely looking forward to your beta to test. I have always thought, just never acted, a website that could act like a “dating service” but bring people together for recreation purposes would be great. One of my thoughts I would like to see, is I am looking to get back in shape so I can do all of the outdoor activities I like. How about a “workout buddy/partner” matching section? Something that would match people that need to get in shape with someone that is in shape and would like to buddy up, if nothing else but for motivation. Another “matching” filter could be exercise clubs people are already members of (ie. 24 hour, Bally’s, etc) so people could get together that have the same club memberships. Having these clubs as sponsors to your web page would be a bonus as well.

This is a great concept, because if you're an avid outdoor fun seeker but don't have too many friends, this is a great way to never have to do these things alone. My only concern is the whole MySpace/Facebook thing as well. I don't know how you'd filter out the not-so-serious people, maybe by having a hotline where the legit people can report the losers on there just out seeking a good time and posting half naked pictures.. their account would be deleted and their e-mail would be black-balled. I'm looking forward to seeing the site! Good luck!! (Yeah, and lose the busty girl ads... keep it gender-neutral!) ;o)

Please make it gender neutral. We girls are athletes too and would rather not see slutty girls selling things to us. Gag.

Sounds like a great concept, can't wait until day 1!

This site has taken too long. I will check back in 8 years to see if it EVER took off. Good luck and I appreciate the back pack I never recieved. What good is the feedback if your never gonna use it, or its always the same stuff? You have to shit or get off the pot. Let this site run itself.

@Roc... LOL! Your language is crude, but direct. Thanks for voicing the frustration--I feel it, also, and am giving up on this site.

Hey every body! I see no one has posted any comments in a wile and I share the same feeling about how slow this is in taking off...
I think every one would be less likely to give up on this project if we had some kind of time line as to when we can expect for this site to take off! Can you guys give us some kind of date when this might all take off? I still believe this could be a great thing if people don't start giving up on you!...

Guys, It's time.
There's still snow on the ground in Maine, LOTS of it in fact. But I'm already planning climbs and putting together teams.
Bald Mt. Tumbledown. Mt. Washington. Katadhin. etc...
Some of us are serious here. ARE YOU?

Does everyone remember what originally drew them to this site? The promise of a free backpack or something like that? Well guess what? It was all a big sham!!! Imagine that, there is not up coming site and no free equipment, just spam being delivered to your inbox. What were we thinking?
